In many of the government jobs, there are three steps to qualify, If you clear the preliminary examination then you qualify for the main examination and on clearing the main examination you qualify for final round of your successful selection and that is interview.

As you might have already know, preliminary examination are to evaluate candidates general knowledge, current affairs knowledge, analytical knowledge and IQ. so this test is mandatory and you do get option to select the topic or subject for this exam. where as, In the main written exam, you have the liberty to select the subjects of your choice. Because this the exam to test your knowledge of the selected subject so this exam is of descriptive and written type. In the final stage, you have to pass the interview and the marks scored in the interview and main written exam are totalized to declare the ranking of candidates.

Lets look at the 10 strategic points which will ensure your success in government examinations.

  1. Select the right subjects
  2. Study material
  3. Preliminary exam- take it seriously
  4. While preparing for preliminary exam, study main subjects which can contribute in preliminary
  5. Play with your strength
  6. Have discipline and plan
  7. Prepare as it is your last chance
  8. Develop skills to manage yourself on the exam day
  9. Practice is the key
  10. Face to face interview – be confident but not over smart

1. Select the right subjects

Your success is highly dependent on this step. This is the very first step. Most of the applicants who did not succeed, almost had one point in common, they don’t select the right subject. Lets discuss on how to select the right subjects for the pre & main exams?

Select the subjects what you have studied as a part of your academic

For the main or written exam, while selecting subjects & registering the application form, candidate has to select their subjects in which they would appear for the exam. Select the subjects which you have studied as a part of curriculum in the school or college. It is always a great advantage, Since you are already familiar with the known subjects and depth of the syllabus, you will be more confident. The study material, time distribution for each topic, preparation strategy, and how to get maximum marks with not much efforts are some of the benefits of the selecting the familiar subjects. Also, because you have already studied the subject in your college or school, most of the subjects and topics is just like revising which reduces the more preparation burden.

Topic of subject or syllabus should not be wide

The other most important stuff to care while choosing the subject is the syllabus. Syllabus should not be too vast otherwise while preparation you will never have control on it. The more and more syllabus in scope means more study, more time to study, more memory use & more mental burden. Although the subject you have selected was already part of your curriculum but it may take you the other way if the syllabus is too vast.

Do not select the subjects which needs analytical & calculation abilities

The subjects which uses analytical or calculation abilities, takes a additional time to calculate or analyze. Because the answer cannot be accomplish without calculation you have to do calculation on paper. Once you start making an effort for attempting the question, it can be very difficult to leave the questions without getting the answer, even if you have spent lot of time on those questions.

2. Study material

It is always better to spend some time on arranging the complete and right syllabus instead of studying the incomplete or incorrect syllabus. The more you know your syllabus the less time would require for study.

We have observed very few candidates has the sense of identifying what exactly need to study. Without analyzing the exam requirement, most candidates initiate studying the topics which covers only a part of the requirements. Candidates start reading the tutorials or books which are not particular to their exam or even if it is, it touches the required topics partially.

It will be beneficial to work hard and spend significant time on gathering the study material or selecting the correct books or tutorials which covers the syllabus completely. For some exams, you won’t get the full syllabus in one tutorial or in one book, so you have to put the efforts to search the same on other books or tutorials or on internet or any other source.
For e.g., In every exam, general knowledge or general awareness subject is there. Since general awareness is not limited to current affairs only but it may also include verbal and non-verbal reasoning, quantitative aptitude and other logical & analytical problem solving which is used to know the IQ level so while preparing for this subject you have to refer multiple tutorials or books and put additional efforts to search and gather the topics.

3. Preliminary exam- take it seriously

As per the historical records, on an average approximately 5% or less candidates pass for the main written examination. That means in case 5,00,000 aspirants appeared for a preliminary examination then around only 25,000 able to pass the exam. If you really think, the preliminary exam is so easy to clear then how come only 95% candidates don’t pass out?
Remember, it is the first step and the entire further journey depends on the success of this step. Each exam has an equally importance. Appear the preliminary examination with same respect as you appear for main exam or face-to-face interview. Your preparedness and hard work for written & interviews will be of no use if you do not succeed in preliminary exam.

Please don’t consider the preliminary exam casually as your whole journey or success depends on it. You will be in the race if your this hurdle is clear.

4. While preparing for preliminary exam, study main subjects which will contribute in preliminary

It is but obvious that, while preparing for the preliminary exam, you also cover one or more subjects and topics in parallel as part of the main examination. Because of the preliminary exam is based on general knowledge so in case you have subjects like geography, history or Environmental Science in your main exam then these subjects can be very helpful in preliminary exam also, and studying these subjects will boost up the knowledge which is helpful in both type of exams.

Always keep the current upcoming exam in full focus. The subjects which you are studying should help in the upcoming exams.

5. Play with your strength

Nobody else in this world except you, knows your abilities and strength. We all are having some abilities, unique skills, and senses which makes us different from others. In case many peoples are following the same path that does not mean that path is correct. If your brain feel something different then follow it, it will never go wrong.

Subjects preparation should be according to your strength. We have observed many candidates who spend more time on studying the new topics but give less time on the known subjects. It seems ok initially but sometimes we have to pay heavily for this carelessness.

For example, In one subject, 70% of the syllabus is known to us & we think, preparing this will be easier in less time so we plan to prepare the remaining 30% of the syllabus first which is less known to us or very new. Since commanding over the new once takes more time & even hard work so we spend almost full time with the new syllabus & less time we spend for known syllabus. In this case, neither we would be strong in newly learned syllabus nor we prepared well of known syllabus.

If we prepare 70% well of the known syllabus and then spend remaining time on the 30% new or less known syllabus then definitely we have a good chance to score high in the exam.

6. Have plan and discipline

Here discipline doesn’t mean to wake up early in the morning and study. Here discipline is the regularity of following a plan. No matter how you study whether you like to study in late night or early morning or like to study in alone or with friends, you should follow a plan and have regularity on it.

Make a plan for every activities and then strictly follow it. Every activities means it also includes morning walk and other activities which are the part of your daily routine. Normally, Government exams are mostly conducted after 3 months or more, after submitting the application forms so in considering view of the long duration, your plan should also includes your important routine activities which is necessary to energies you.

Your study plan should be practical enough to follow or else it is going to be failed to follow. Most of the people makes an action packed plan however, after one or two weeks they could not follow it. The reason is, their plan have no time for refreshment. This type of plan work out only if the exams are 1 or 2 weeks away however in case, the exams are too far then you can not study continuously. So to keep you fresh & energies, include your important routine activities in the plan.

7. Prepare as it is your last chance

The availability of Indian Government jobs are decreasing every year. The vacancies of the post which you are looking for will be certainly less in near future. Other critical factor about government jobs is, exam for a post does not held every year. The processing of an exam for any post takes approximately 1-2 yrs (from declaration of the post to declaring final result and then handing over the appointment letter), so losing a chance means waiting for next 3-4 yrs again. Above all that, age is another important factor. If your age is under eligibility criteria then only you will be eligible to try again.

Never ever think of doing better in 2nd chance. Our analysis says that people have the best possibility to qualify in the first attempt itself. There are some obvious reasons, First of all you prepare confidently in your first attempt whereas in your second or other next attempt, you have a fear of failure and because of the failure in first attempt, confidence keeps low. Second reason is, exam pattern keeps changing. The knowledge or experience which you have from your first attempt is of no use if the exam pattern gets changed.

So In case you are getting a chance to appear in an exam then work hard and apply all of your energy and resources to get the success in the first attempt itself otherwise the whole life is there to regret.

8. Develop skills to manage yourself on the exam day

Above all mentioned points focuses on preparing yourself for the examination. Now, this point is for the examination day itself. Doesn’t matter how much knowledge you have or how hard you have worked, at the end what matters is, what you have gained. In case you are not able to perform well in the examination then everything is a waste.

Points to remember on the examination day to perform best & score high

Don’t be so excited in case your exam paper is easy to you. Remember, it is a competition and are very few so to get the success you have to be well ahead from other candidates. Remember, If the question paper is easy then the paper will be easy for other candidates too.
A single questions correct or incorrect answer can change the whole game. Don’t take chance thinking that most of paper is solved & now I can take a chance.

The very 1st thing you have to do after receiving the exam paper is, go through all the questions & mark the questions for which you have the answer ready in your mind. First answer these questions and then move to other questions. Second thing is, attempt the section which looks easy and will takes less time comparatively. Once you are done with answering all the questions for which you are damn confident then use the remaining time to answer the remaining questions.

Do not get disappointed if the question paper is tough, Be calm. Your aim should be to attempt maximum questions with correct answer within the duration limit. If you succeed to do so, you can expect a better result in favor of you.

9. Practice is the key

We know that the practice is the key of our success but interesting thing is that, we need a boost up to keep us motivated. Best way to keep ourselves motivated is choose some best inspiring quotes and make posters and stick it somewhere in your study room or other places where you spend most of the time. Remember, you have to search the success key yourself, there is no one to motivate you.

There is no other option than practices & hard work. We have witness some amazing stories where some average IQ level person got success whereas person with much better IQ level were not able to crack the exams just because of the lack of continuous learning and hard work.

motivations and Inspiration both are very critical factors to keep you in the competition when there is a long journey ahead & you have to win the competition. Be your self-motivator and for this you can follow the below strategies to keep you motivated.

  1. Have a posters in your room having inspirational quote written on them.
  2. Keep posters or photos of legends like A. P. J. Abdul Kalam and others great scientists who achieved the success with their hard work.
  3. Set the screen wallpaper for your laptop, mobile, or other gadgets about those things which really motivates you a lot.
  4. Stay away from the peoples who demotivate you or having negative thoughts.

10. Face-to-face interview – be confident but not over smart

The most frequent question which we have observed i.e. How to crack the face-to-face interview?

If you are reading this article then we are sure that a feeling of excitement and happiness both has entered in your body, this is because interview is the final round of exam for most of the government jobs and everyone wants to be part of this round. If you have qualified for the interview then it means you have already achieved a milestone by your intelligence, Practice and your hard work.
At this round, no one would wants to loose after coming too close to the destination.

Below 10 points are the key of success in any type of face-to-face interview for the government jobs.

  1. Know the purpose : Since you have proven your knowledge already by qualifying the written examination, now at this stage of face-to-face interview, interviewer need to make sure that whoever they are choosing for the job, must be an motivated, ambitious, intelligent and keen learner from experiences, the candidates should have his or her own point of view and also the candidate should be a good human being with positive attitude. Once you know these purpose, you are the self-coach for your own.
  2. Be well dressed (be in formal) : A formal well dressed person always puts a positive and good impression. The seriousness towards the occasion and your dressing sense can certainly make the things much better for you.
  3. You must be confident : Our facial expression and Body language says a lot about us. Interviewer don’t like candidate with energy less and withered personality. While speaking and answering, your voice should not be loud but full of energy and confident. Speak with full confidence as you have no doubt in our mind about it.
  4. Don’t try to be over smart : Over smartness sometime means that you are trying to make fool of others who knows the topic far better than you. It does not matter how much confidence you show but if you are saying something incorrect and thinking that the interviewer takes it as it is then you are committing a big fault.
  5. First impression works well: Trust me, first impression not just only feel interviewer happy about you but also it decides your positivity & confidence. Enter the interview room confidently and steady with a little smile on your face, greet interviewers by having eye contact, tell them your name and then you may ask if you can take your seat. When they ask for your introduction then tell them about you calmly in energetic voice.
  6. Every question need not to be answered : It is not necessary that everybody knows everything. If you have no answer of any question then either ask them for more clarification or clearly mention that you are not aware about this.
  7. Include real life examples in your answer : Include real world example in support of your answer wherever possible. That way you can connect with the interviewer in better way and it also helps interviewer to see you as a practical human being.
  8. Use your common sense : Each person on this planet is different & this applies with the interviewers also. Do not follow the perception of others who are already interviewed by the same interviewers. Follow your own senses and answer as per the expectations of interviewer.
  9. Be a good listener : Do not answer before the interviewer finishes. To answer them you have to understand the different angles of the query been asked to you and their motive behind the question.
  10. You should not be biased in your answer : You should have a clear point of view however you should also have a balanced answer. For e.g., if interviewer asks “what’s you point of view on the new traffic rules on increasing the fine on violating them?” then first you need to tell them whether this decision is good or not good according to you and then you have to tell them negative and positive impact of implementing new traffic rule with more fine on the society.

As per our study and analysis, this is all what we have observed and can suggest to the government job seekers in India. We will be desperately waiting for your success stories.

Best of luck !
